How to read a listing

  • Tattoos allowed: the facility says on its own website that guests with tattoos can use the shared bath.
  • Allowed with conditions: for example a cover sticker, a size limit, set hours or a form to fill in.
  • Private bath only: you can book a private bath; the shared bath is not confirmed.
  • Listed by the city: an official tourism listing tags the facility as tattoo-OK without giving details.
  • Reported by visitors: a Japanese bath directory lists it as tattoo-OK, but the facility's website says nothing. Ask at reception before you pay.

Before you go

Onsen means the water comes from a natural hot spring. A sento is a neighbourhood bathhouse and may use heated tap water. Most city sento have long accepted tattoos.

Rules and opening hours change. Check the official link on the day, and show the Japanese name on each page if you need to ask for directions.

New to this? Read can you go to an onsen with tattoos?

We have not visited these baths ourselves.

About this guide and booking links. Tattoo rules come from each facility's own website, a city tourism listing, or, where marked, a Japanese bath directory. The Expedia, Trip.com, Klook and Amazon links are affiliate links; we may earn a commission if you book or buy. A booking or purchase does not establish tattoo permission.
